Centralized Control, Decentralized Execution

09:00 am - 10:00 am - Chesapeake Ballroom
LtGen. John F. Sattler, USMC (ret.)

In 2019, retailers are challenged more than ever to improve in-store execution and the shopping experience for consumers. In-store retail workers must be empowered to complete their daily tasks and meet these needs, but their managers and administrators must also have control and visibility over what happens in the stores to ultimately improve efficiency while still completing the mission.

“Centralized Control, Decentralized Execution” is a military concept entailing the design, coordination, and execution of operations in the field while maintaining visibility and control over those operations from a remote location. In this Keynote Address, LtGen. Sattler will discuss how this concept can be utilized to achieve success in the mission, both in a military context, but also in the context of the retail industry at large. Join LtGen. Sattler and discover ways that the lessons learned from Centralized Control, Decentralized Execution can be applied to your organization right now.

LEVERAGING COMMUNICATIONS TO GAUGE AND IMPROVE THE COMMITMENT OF DECENTRALIZED TEAMS

10:10 am - 10:50 am - Arnold
Ron Apel, CEO, EX-Sell; Steve Oakes, Head of Retail Operations, Panasonic UK

As retail continues to transition into the “Gig Economy,”  engaging staff effectively, whether they be 1099 contractors or W2 employees, is more challenging than ever. As more and more staff members have two or more ways to generate income, they tend to be more committed to those jobs that drive a higher percentage of their income—to the detriment of their other jobs.

In this session, leaders from product companies, retailers, and third-party labor will discuss:

  • How communications tools can be used to gauge staff commitment and increase responsiveness

  • How communications can be used to increase the engagement of a decentralized workforce

  • What the industry will look like in the future in the context of a decentralized workforce.

Natural Insight has many scheduling options that save significant amounts of administrative time and ensure work is completed at the right time and by the right people. Two of these options are Bundled Scheduling and Team Scheduling.

Have you ever needed to gather a team of different roles and complete the work at a specific time and location? Team Scheduling is for you. Maybe you have a few pieces of work across different projects that take place at the same store? Bundled Scheduling is just what the doctor ordered.

In this session, join Eric Jacobson, Training and Implementations Manager, Natural Insight, as he covers the benefits of Team Scheduling and Bundled Scheduling, best practices, and how each can make your organization stronger in the bustling retail marketplace.

Properly executing projects with a large workforce can become even more challenging when your company is growing quickly. You are required to onboard a variety of people—many of whom are used to different processes—and get them to execute seamlessly in unison.

In this panel discussion, you will learn how companies that grew quickly—whether organically, via acquisition, or by contracting out work—approach centralized control and decentralized execution while scaling.

Back by popular demand! Your data is only as good as the people that collect it, and your technology is only as good as its operation by the user. Expending the energy to create an efficient and enjoyable work experience through an easy-to-use and guided survey will contribute to a happier workforce and better results in the field. The perfect survey can be the "it factor" that transforms your team from a just collection of employees to a team who is proud to represent your brand.

In this session, you will learn how to build and format your call reports for maximized efficiency and clarity, guiding the rep towards better information and a more pleasant work experience. Eric will discuss:

  • Using survey builder to create a visually appealing and streamlined survey
  • Planning your survey output towards more meaningful data
  • Tackling real-life examples of common complex data capture scenarios
  • Expanding survey use past field data for a more centralized data repository

Across the globe, different military branches execute in unison from a common locale. This requires commanding officers to have the right field information in order to conduct operations. In many cases, different military branches perform various roles to support one another, and the same is possible in retail—especially when using tools like Natural Insight and NI Exchange.

But what are the challenges leaders face when coordinating missions together? What best practices are there from military execution that can apply to the retail world?

In this panel, LtGen. John F. Sattler, USMC (ret.) and Maj. Gen. Mike Skinner, USAF (ret.) and CIO of Eurpac Services will discuss how the military collaborates and executes seamlessly across different branches and between different nations.
